Walk Back

Down in the south below
The Mason Dixon line
Was a land where people lived in grace
And the tree rings kept the time

Gentility and manners were
The way life met the day
Then the Yankees came with Sherman
And they burned it all away

Then they had to walk back
From the prisons and the camps
Then they had to walk back
When the air was hot and damp
Then they had to walk back
From the battle and the strife
Then they had to walk back
And start another life

The carpetbaggers came to claim
What war had left behind
And the meek became the masters of
The crippled and the blind

Weary years where brothers met
Along a rifle sight
And in 65 a half a million
Would never see the light

Then they had to walk back
From the battles where they lay
Then they had to walk back
Over hills of barren clay
Then they had to walk back
With their fields and cattle gone
Then they had to walk back
To let their life go on
One hundred years and fifty
And we’re still now hard at war
For oil and for power
And the things we’ve heard before

While the money men play both sides
And we live inside a lie
And they’re riches they are measured
In the blood we leave behind

And it’s time we walked back
Not be ruled by men with fear
And it’s time we walked back
To the freedoms we hold dear
And it’s time we walked back
Draw a line upon the sand
And it’s time we walked back
Let the constitution stand

And it’s time we walked back
To a world we left behind
And it’s time we walked back
Not heed the party line
And it’s time we walked back
Bring our God back to this land
And it’s time we walked back
It’s time we take a stand
